Angular node

A plane or cone through the nucleus where ψ=0\psi = 0. An orbital has ll angular nodes, so they fix its shape: s has none, p has one plane, d has two.

The three p orbitalsEach p orbital has two lobes of opposite phase on either side of the nucleus, with a nodal plane through the nucleus between them. px, py and pz point along the x, y and z axes.pxpypztwo lobes of opposite phase (+ blue, − orange)nodal plane through the nucleus

Each p orbital has one angular node, a plane through the nucleus.

Example

2pz2p_z has one angular node, the xyxy plane. A 4f orbital (l=3l = 3) has 3 angular nodes and 4−3−1=04 - 3 - 1 = 0 radial nodes.
