CHEM 121 glossary

Byproduct

A substance formed in a reaction alongside the desired product. Byproduct atoms are part of the reactant mass that the atom economy counts as waste.

Example

Every amide link formed in making nylon-6,6 releases one HX2O\ce{H2O} molecule as a byproduct; making Kevlar from an acid chloride releases HCl\ce{HCl} instead.
