Electron volt (eV)

A small energy unit convenient for single electrons and photons: 1 eV=1.602×10−191\ \text{eV} = 1.602\times10^{-19} J, the energy an electron gains crossing 1 volt. Convert eV to J before combining it with hc/λhc/\lambda in joules.

Example

Sodium's work function of 2.28 eV is 3.65×10−193.65\times10^{-19} J. Per mole, 1 eV corresponds to 96.5 kJ/mol.
