CHEM 121 glossary

Group

A vertical column of the periodic table. Elements in a group have the same valence configuration, so they behave alike; for main-group elements the group number (minus 10 for groups 13 to 18) is the number of valence electrons.

Example

Group 17 (F, Cl, Br, I) are all ns2 np5ns^2\,np^5 with 7 valence electrons, and each gains one electron to form XX−\ce{X-}.
