Hydrolysis
Splitting a bond by reaction with water; for polymers, the reverse of condensation. Water breaks an ester or amide link, adding –OH to one side and –H to the other.
Example
Hydrolysis of each ester link in PET regenerates –COOH and –OH groups, returning terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol.
