Magnetic quantum number

The quantum number mlm_l, an integer from −l-l to +l+l, that sets the orientation of an orbital. A subshell therefore has 2l+12l + 1 orbitals.

d orbital shapesFour of the five d orbitals are four-leaf clovers, with lobes either between the axes (dxy, dxz, dyz) or along them (dx²−y²). The fifth, dz², is a dumbbell along z with a ring around its middle. Every d orbital has two angular nodes.dxydx²−y²dz²five d orbitals when n ≥ 3; two angular nodes each

l=2l = 2 has five mlm_l values, hence five d orbitals.

Example

For l=2l = 2, ml=−2,−1,0,+1,+2m_l = -2, -1, 0, +1, +2: five d orbitals. For l=0l = 0 only ml=0m_l = 0 exists, so each s subshell has one orbital.
