Placebo

An inactive treatment, such as a sugar pill, given to a control group so that the real drug's effect can be separated from the effect of simply being treated. It is used in trials when no standard treatment exists to compare with.

Example

If 30% of patients on placebo and 60% on the drug improve, the drug's real effect is the difference between the groups, not the full 60%.
