Plasticizer

A small molecule mixed into a polymer that sits between the chains and weakens their attraction for each other, making the material softer and more flexible.

Example

Rigid PVC is used for pipes; adding plasticizer gives the soft, flexible PVC of garden hoses and cable insulation.
