Polarizability

How easily a molecule's or atom's electron cloud is distorted to form a temporary dipole. It increases with the number of electrons and the size of the cloud, and higher polarizability means stronger dispersion forces.

Bar chart of values in KHe: 4.2 K; Ne: 27.1 K; Ar: 87.3 K; Kr: 119.9 K; Xe: 165 K050100150200K4.2He27.1Ne87.3Ar119.9Kr165Xe

Noble-gas boiling points rise as the atoms get bigger and more polarizable.

Example

At room temperature FX2\ce{F2} and ClX2\ce{Cl2} are gases, BrX2\ce{Br2} is a liquid and IX2\ce{I2} is a solid: the larger the halogen, the more polarizable its electron cloud.
