Preclinical testing
Laboratory (cell) and animal studies of a drug candidate's effectiveness, toxicity and dosing, carried out before any testing in humans. Passing it is required before clinical trials can begin.
Example
Giving a candidate compound to rats to find the dose that damages the liver is preclinical testing.
