CHEM 121 glossary

Shell

All the orbitals of an atom with the same principal quantum number nn. Shell nn contains nn subshells, n2n^2 orbitals and room for 2n22n^2 electrons.

The n=3n = 3 shell: 1+3+5=91 + 3 + 5 = 9 orbitals.

Example

The n=4n = 4 shell has 4s, 4p, 4d and 4f: 1+3+5+7=161 + 3 + 5 + 7 = 16 orbitals holding up to 32 electrons.
