Standing wave

A wave that stays in place, oscillating up and down between fixed points (nodes) instead of travelling. In a box only standing waves with L=nλ/2L = n\lambda/2 fit, which is where quantized energies come from.

Particle-in-a-box wavefunction ψWavefunction between walls at x = 0 and x = L with 5 lobes and 4 interior nodes (marked with circles).V = ∞V = ∞0Lxψ

Five half-wavelengths fit exactly between the walls.

Example

A guitar string fixed at both ends vibrates only at wavelengths 2L2L, LL, 2L/32L/3, …; an electron in a 1.00 nm box in state n=2n = 2 has λ=1.00\lambda = 1.00 nm.
