Terminal atom
An atom bonded to only one other atom, at the edge of the skeleton. H is always terminal, and so is F; terminal halogens form exactly one bond and carry three lone pairs.
Example
In , the five Cl atoms are terminal: each has one P–Cl bond and 3 lone pairs, so each has an octet.
