d orbital

An orbital with l=2l = 2, first found in the n=3n = 3 shell. There are five: four are cloverleaf-shaped with two nodal planes, and dz2d_{z^2} has two lobes along zz plus a ring, with two conical nodes.

d orbital shapesFour of the five d orbitals are four-leaf clovers, with lobes either between the axes (dxy, dxz, dyz) or along them (dx²−y²). The fifth, dz², is a dumbbell along z with a ring around its middle. Every d orbital has two angular nodes.dxydx²−y²dz²five d orbitals when n ≥ 3; two angular nodes each

Example

3d has 2 angular nodes and no radial node; 4d has 2 angular and 1 radial. The five 3d orbitals hold up to 10 electrons, the ten columns of the first transition series.
