Multiple bond

A bond made of two shared pairs (double, bond order 2) or three shared pairs (triple, bond order 3). More shared pairs make the bond shorter and stronger; a double bond is one σ\sigma plus one π\pi bond, a triple bond one σ\sigma plus two π\pi.

HCN\ce{HCN}: a C≡N triple bond completes the octets of C and N.

Example

NX2\ce{N2} has a triple bond, 110 pm long and about 945 kJ/mol to break, one of the strongest bonds known.
