Natural product

A compound made by a living organism, such as a plant, fungus or bacterium. Many drugs are natural products or were developed from one used as a lead compound.

Example

Morphine comes from the opium poppy, penicillin from a mould and the anticancer drug paclitaxel (Taxol) from the bark of the Pacific yew.
