Percent yield

The amount of product actually obtained as a percentage of the maximum (theoretical) amount the balanced equation allows. Yield measures how well a reaction was carried out; atom economy measures how much waste the reaction must make even when it works perfectly.

Example

If a reaction could give at most 10.0 g of product and 8.5 g is collected, the yield is 8.510.0×100%=85%\tfrac{8.5}{10.0} \times 100\% = 85\%.
