Elimination reaction

A reaction in which a small molecule is removed from a larger one, usually forming a C=C double bond. The removed molecule is a byproduct, so the atom economy is below 100%.

Example

CHX3CHX2Cl→CHX2=CHX2+HCl\ce{CH3CH2Cl -> CH2=CH2 + HCl}: 28.0564.51×100%=43.5%\dfrac{28.05}{64.51} \times 100\% = 43.5\%, since the HCl\ce{HCl} is lost.
