CHEM 121 glossary

Substitution reaction

A reaction in which one atom or group in a molecule is replaced by another. The group that leaves becomes a byproduct, so the atom economy is always below 100%.

Example

CHX3CHX2Br+NaOH→CHX3CHX2OH+NaBr\ce{CH3CH2Br + NaOH -> CH3CH2OH + NaBr}: 46.07108.97+40.00×100%=30.9%\dfrac{46.07}{108.97 + 40.00} \times 100\% = 30.9\%, because the NaBr is waste.
